Herakut — After the Laughter takes an intimate view at the individuals behind the impressive pieces, as well as their dynamic as a team, their interior styles, and their place within the art world. Designed as a scrapbook by Hera and Akut, the title features all new murals, works on canvas, and sketches.

The book is collaged with images in different mediums and includes revealing photographs of the duo. Rock Rainbow Sparkle, a new series of works by Los Angeles-based artist Natalia Fabia, in her highly anticipated debut solo exhibition in New York at Jonathan Levin Gallery.

For her first solo show on the East Coast, Fabia chose to use the location as creative direction for her paintings and spent three months exploring the region, doing research, gathering visual materials and staging photo shoots to serve as reference imagery for her new body of work. Particularly inspired by people and places with a raw, punk sensibility, she spent time in New York City (Manhattan and Brooklyn), Philadelphia, and Asbury Park in New Jersey.

In the artist’s words: “Punk rock is one of my true loves. Punk to me is an attitude, a lifestyle. Punk is a middle finger, punk is do-it-yourself, do what you want. It’s a kind of freedom. I’m attracted to my subjects for having that quality. This attitude is what I wanted to convey in this series. My models (many of which are friends) are all tough, independent, strong, fun, hard working, talented, tattooed and stylishly dressed. I look at punk rock as being dirty and rough, yet sparkly and enticing at the same time, and that’s the theme of my paintings.”

A skilled young oil painter, Fabia selects luminous subjects with an intriguing dichotomy—adult yet innocent, strong yet vulnerable. To view her work is a voyeuristic endeavor. Lingerie-wearing vixens lounge in intimate rooms with all the comforts of home, or gather in groups for after-hour parties at dimly-lit bars. Fabia’s playfully erotic female figures are adorned with alluring details—glimmering jewelry and intricate tattoos. These confident, empowered beauties evoke burlesque and pin-up traditions. A seductive mixture of glitter and grit, they pose provocatively in the artist’s carefully arranged compositions.

Lush settings include environmental textures, elements of graffiti, iconic landmarks and other geographically specific architecture. Infused with Fabia’s signature style, vividly saturated candy color palette and dazzling spectrum of light, scenes in these paintings—like most of her work—are a combination of fantasy narratives and actual moments captured from the artist’s vibrant life, her passion for ornate fashion, nightlife and glamour with a punk rock edge.

ABOUT THE ARTIST

Natalia Fabia is of Polish descent, born in 1983 in Burbank, California, and currently based in Los Angeles. In 2007, she graduated from Art Center College of Design in Pasadena. Inspired by light, color, punk rock music, hot chicks and sparkles, her work has been featured in numerous gallery exhibitions and publications.

After various exhibitions in London and a dual solo show this past summer, Xue Wang has

caught the attention from the California pop surrealist art scene and has been invited to exhibit at Copro Gallery in Santa Monica, California. Xue presents five new paintings for her first American showcase, titled The unclouded mind. The collection of paintings are inspired by her recent visit to Hellingly mental institute which has been abandoned for many years, and Xue's fasination with the forgotten.

One of my personal favorite artists Yoko D'holbachie will be opening her first solo show in Italy at Mondo Bizzarro Gallery on the 3rd of December.

Yoko d’Holbachie’s work is characterized by a kind of psychedelic introspection; she perfectly blends Californian surrealism with Japanese kawaii. Her mastery of colour ignites her canvases with a light reminiscent of that found in video games and which illuminates imaginative and touching landscapes, breathing life in to fantastical, and memorable characters.

Yoko d’Holbachie’s unique style and personality have arrived in Italy for the first time. Her inaugural Italian exhibition will be unveiled at Mondo Bizzarro Gallery in December in Via Reggio Emilia 32, alongside the silk prints of MURAKAMI and a wide selection of original drawings by some Japan’s most popular anime artists. December has been dedicated to Japanese art, paying homage to the nation of the Rising Sun and an inexhaustible source of pop culture.

Waste Land is a 2010 documentary directed by Lucy Walker, João Jardim and Karen Harley. The film documents two years of work of Brazilian contemporary modern artist Vik Muniz in creating art with the cooperation of scavengers of recyclables working at Jardim Gramacho, one of the world's largest landfills, serving the metropolis of Rio de Janeiro in Brazil.

Together with people employed to pick out recyclable material from garbage, Muniz creates from actual landfill trash large-scale mosaic portraits that are sold at art auctions in London and exhibited at the Museum of Modern Art in São Paulo.

The film portrays the lives of the garbage pickers and their working conditions as well as Muniz's efforts to help them to gain recognition and better living conditions.

Black Rat Projects is extremely excited to announce the opening of Swoon’s ‘Murmuration’ which opens to the public on December 2^nd.

Our new exhibition is a large scale installation by the New York artist Swoon. This is Swoon’s first London solo exhibition and she has spent three long weeks transforming the gallery space into a mesmerising world populated by towering sculptural figures, elaborate colours and delicate paper cuts.

Swoon is constantly seeking new and revolutionary movements to contribute her energy and creativity to. In the past these have included; gate-crashing the Venice Biennale in an armada of ships made from New York city junk, sailing the Hudson and Mississippi rivers in similar floating creations and most recently taking part in the huge humanitarian effort proceeding Haiti’s earthquake by rebuilding homes as part of the Konbit Shelter project.

Swoon has also been showing her unique creations in some major contemporary art spaces including recent shows at the Boston ICA, Museum of Contemporary Art LA and the Museum of Modern Art New Orleans.

This is undoubtedly a unique opportunity to see one of her most spell-binding installations and it is not to be missed at any cost.

Secondly is a photography project by two Photographers, Ari Versluis and profiler Ellie Uyttenbroek have worked together since October 1994. Inspired by a shared interest in the striking dress codes of various social groups, they have systematically documented numerous identities over the last 16 years. Very interesting reflection of modern day life and fashion. They also just released a book, that is for sale on their website. This would make a great Christmas present.

On Thursday November 24th, Cuban New Yorker and Barcelonaphile urban artist Jorge Rodríguez-Gerada will unveil his breathtaking and ground breaking new work at Galería Ignacio de Lassaletta. Presenting new pieces from the Urban Analogies charcoal drawing series created on 250 year old wall surfaces and the new Memorylithics sculpture series, using discarded historical architectural elements over 500 years old. All the work in this exhibition is based on the intangible memory that these materials possess and the passage of time that they portray. To celebrate the occasion a printed special edition catalogue of 1 to 500 numbered copies, including an insightful essay by Iván de la Nuez, will feature all of the exhibited works.

Jorge Rodríguez-Gerada is a founder of the New York Culture Jamming movement and an innovator in the international urban art scene. Since the late 90´s he has been replacing the faces of cultural icons chosen by advertisers with the faces of anonymous people to question the controls imposed on public space, the role models designated and the type of events that are guarded by the collective memory. Rodríguez-Gerada´s unique direction was mentioned in Naomi Klein´s book No Logo and was a precursor of the use of anonymous portraits now common in street art. His spectacular interventions are created for the sake of bringing awareness to relevant social issues. His large scale time base works avoid negative impact on the environment, challenge the conformity in contemporary art and allow for a reflection that goes beyond the completion of the piece to focus in its concept, process, and the metaphor that comes forth because of the material chosen.

'In spite of the growth in time periods and dimensions, and in spite of Rodríguez-Gerada never betraying his urban condition, his work does not 'crumble' in a gallery. It has its own presence that doesn’t really listen to a change of scale, nor acts as a mini-sized version of his usual work pattern. Like in all his itinerary, the point is to move a world into another world, a time into a different time, a meaning into an altogether 'other' meaning. For this, his pieces behave like a ready-made solution, willing to pay their debts with Art in general and with Urban Art in particular. Is it calling on Banksy or Blu? Both, but also on Duchamp, Brancusi or Picabia, as well as from Rosalind Krauss’ 'expanded sculptures', from Robert Smithson or Ana Mendieta.'

XTSY solo show by Marco Mazzoni at Gallery B15

Marco Mazzoni was born in 1982 in Tortona, Italy, and is currently based in Milan. Marcos work is not advocated by size, but are strong and powerful in the depictions of various women that are removed of features that make them instantly recognizable.

Their loss of identity draws the viewer towards the image, due to the shear mystery connected with his works. Marcos firm hand evokes a compelling and fleeting sensation. The ghostly fairytale images renders a mix of flowers, birds and faces lacking of globular organs. These details makes his work hard to forget, and a delight to remember.

Marco Mazzoni's first solo show at Gallery B15 will open on November 10th from 5pm to 8pm.

Brad Reuben Kunkle's world premiere one-man exhibition, Against Nature, was sold out opening night in April of 2010 in New York City.

He has been featured in Fine Art Connoisseur magazine, Poets and Artists, and on the covers of American Art Collector and International Artists magazine.

Born in 1978 in a small town in Pennsylvania, he studied painting at Kutztown University under the primary guidance of George Sorrels, who was taught by a student of William-Adolphe Bouguereau.

Sometimes you come across an artist on Facebook that you have never seen before, most of the time alot of it is just not for me, but once in awhile you find something that really captures you. This is my experience with finding the work of Dilka Nassyrova.

When looking at her photo albums I could see how her work over the past 3 years has developed dramatically, and her most recent paintings are just stunning. Beautifully painted, intriguing themes, and balanced compositions. I have to say that after today I am a new fan and am already trying to find out how I can add one of her gorgeous works to my collection.

Over the course of the past decade, FAILE developed an artistic practice inflected with remixes of mass culture, and built on careful juxtapositions of seeming dualities. Fragments of FAILE allows us to see them working at one frontier of their practice, stripping their painting down to its essentials and engaging a century of the more expressive terrain of abstract portraiture.

"We set out to explore something a little looser with this new set of figurative paintings. This was also a chance to explore ideas of identity, character and narrative within our own work. Feeling very inspired by the process and the fragments that comprise much of the work we do, you could say these new works are a love affair with painting and process.

Along with the new canvasses and imagery are a series of new wood paintings. Working on the two series together felt very natural to us and each played a strong role with one another while evolving separately.

We're really excited to share the new body of work with everyone. If you're in London please stop by.

If you can't make it to London and find yourself in NYC, we have a new mural up on Houston and Bowery. We're honored to be one of the artists invited to paint this infamous wall. The mural was hand-painted in the studio and then pasted over the course of a week. Big shout out to everyone we meet while putting the work up.

While studying architecture and object design at the School of the Art Institute of Chicago, he followed an open interdisciplinary structure that allowed him to develop his vision, and made him prove the soundness of his work. "I had very intense conceptual-based architectural studio courses in school that didn't allow time to slack off, to say the least."

He points to his years as a student as pivotal in his development as a thinker and artist today. That's probably why his design, materials, and technical discipline can stand up to academic rigor, but it won't completely explain why these bird "dwelling units" have a satellite dish for television reception, a solar panel on the roof powering a night light, nor the certain minimalist elegance overlaying it all. The Project

"We’re turning 5 years old here at Village underground, and in celebration we’ve decided to try and make a dream happen.

We want to build London’s most public gallery. For years this immense wall on Great Eastern Street has been host to many artists painting in the wall’s 4m X 3m recesses, they’re oddly like natural picture frames, from Steve Powers and Shepard Fairy to incredibly talented local artists. We want to evolve this informal project, turning it into an amazing permanent art space.

Why We’re Coming to Kickstarter

To do this, we need to design, build and install bullet proof metal and glass frames over the recesses to protect the art work from theft and vandalism. Importantly, this means that artists can paint on board and canvas so the work can be kept. Its been really tough over the years to see such amazing work lost as the next artist paints over it.

Saving the art work will mean that artists can sell their pieces and earn a living. That’s obviously important, but it also means that we can exhibit art that’s not just painting – photography, digital art, mixed media, even interactive work: This takes the wall onto a whole new level.

Moniker Art Fair follow up - Dabs Myla in London

This past weekend London saw the opening of Moniker Art Fair, where art galleries and artists came together representing the new contemporary and urban art world. Over the weekend thousands of people flocked to the fair, either to support the artists that they love and follow, or to escape from the over-load of Frieze art fair. To sum it up, Moniker was truly amazing. For the second year running Moniker has brought something special to London during art week. Offering everyone who attended a fresh experience, where discussion is welcome, laughter is key and having a good time and making new friends is what the fair is all about. This year Moniker welcomed Australian duo Dabs and Myla to the UK for the first time. Myself and Frankie Shea have teamed up and invited Dabs and Myla to come to London and take part in the fair, they created their own project space. An installation that included a 6 foot ciggerette box, two sky scrapers (one with a moustache) and a collection of hand painted cigarettes. Over the weekend Dabs and Myla painted the exterior wall of Village Underground and Sunday saw the release of a freshly pulled 2 colour screen print.

On top of all that, artists like D*Face, Ben Eine had print releases and the fair saw visitors like Mark Ryden and Marion Peck. The fair was from October 13 - 16, if you missed it this year make sure you mark your calendar next year for Moniker Art Fair.

Melbourne natives Dabs Myla relocated to Los Angeles in 2009. Dabs started painting graffiti in 1995, and began teaching Myla graffiti writing about ten years later, after meeting in art school where they became friends and eventually fell in love. Soon afterward, they decided they liked their collaborative pieces better than their individual work, and from that point on; they worked together exclusively, as Dabs Myla. Inspired by graffiti, travel and their wonderful chaotic life together as a couple, their paintings play Dabs’ mischievous and sometimes ribald characters off Myla’s photorealistic cityscapes.

"The artist installation we are creating for the Moniker Art Fair is going to be a little different from any of our past installations. We are working on giving the installation a lot of depth, playing with our usual aesthetic and ideas of creating a small wonderland of our imagination for people to visit and interact with. Following on from the hugely successful debut last year, Moniker is back to shake up London’s art fair scene once again highlighting the international scope of street art and beyond. Moniker was responsible for putting East London on the art fair map in 2010, challenging traditional conventions with both gallery exhibits and further signature project spaces ready to whet the appetites of the art crowds.

Alyssa Monks- Photo Realism

Born 1977 in Ridgewood, New Jersey, Alyssa Monks began oil painting as a child. She studied at The New School in New York and Montclair State University and earned her B.A. from Boston College in 1999.

Monks’ paintings explore the tension between abstraction and realism, using different filters to visually distort and disintegrate the body. In this shallow painted space, the subject is pushing against our real space. Strokes of thick paint in delicate color relationships are pushed and pulled to imitate glass, steam, water and flesh.

“When I began painting the human body, I was obsessed with it and needed to create as much realism as possible. I chased realism until it began to unravel and deconstruct itself,” Alyssa states, “Realism and Abstraction are in a symbiotic relationship – they need each other to exist and eventually become the same.”

Yoskay Yamamoto Solo exhibition at LeBasse Projects

LeBasse Projects is proud to announce, Picking Up Where We Left Off, a solo
exhibition from Japanese artist Yoskay Yamamoto.

This will be the artistʼs fourth solo exhibition with the gallery, and will showcase an intentionally looser body of work. The show continues from where Yamamoto left off in 2010 by exhibiting both painting and sculptural work. While the show doesnʼt focus on a specific theme, it continues the intimate statements of selfexpression that began in his last series of exhibitions. The freedom in the new work allows Yamamoto to create a deeper variety in both emotion and expression than his previous few shows. The title of the exhibit, Picking Up Where We Left Off, references the time Yamamoto was able to spend with his family earlier this year – it had been more than eight years since he had seen his brother. Yamamoto was relieved that they were all able to reconnect as if no time had passed. This reconnection with family has inspired Yamamotoʼs new paintings and sculptural works.

"Where Children Sleep- stories of diverse children around the world, told through portraits and pictures of their bedrooms. When Fabrica asked me to come up with an idea for engaging with children's rights, I found myself thinking about my bedroom: how significant it was during my childhood, and how it reflected what I had and who I was. It occurred to me that a way to address some of the complex situations and social issues affecting children would be to look at the bedrooms of children in all kinds of different circumstances. From the start, I didn't want it just to be about 'needy children' in the developing world, but rather something more inclusive, about children from all types of situations. It seemed to make sense to photograph the children themselves, too, but separately from their bedrooms, using a neutral background. My thinking was that the bedroom pictures would be inscribed with the children's material and cultural circumstances ' the details that inevitably mark people apart from each other ' while the children themselves would appear in the set of portraits as individuals, as equals ' just as children. This selection of diptych's from 56 in the book (Chris Boot November 2010). The book is written and presented for an audience of 9-13 year olds ' intended to interest and engage children in the details of the lives of other children around the world, and the social issues affecting them, while also being a serious photographic essay for an adult audience."

Since its inaugural show in 2005, iam8bit has been the most popular group art exhibition in Los Angeles, enlisting hundreds of artists to remix their 80’s videogame memories using paint, plush, sculpture or whatever other tools they call their own. The show has been applauded for its spectacle of interactive art as well: a 6-foot-tall, working Atari 2600 controller (15 times scale); a custom-developed version of Guitar Hero, featuring old-school video game theme songs like Mega Man 2 and Ikari Warriors (in partnership with Harmonix); and much more.

Culver City and one Im proud to annouce is the first USA solo exhibition of Tom Bagshaw. I have been exhibiting Tom's work in London for awhile now and its so nice to see the Californian art scene show confidence in his work.

Corey Helford presents a double solo exhibitions by New York painter David Stoupakis and UK digital artist Tom Bagshaw.
Exhibiting alongside Stoupakis in the main gallery, UK artist Tom Bagshaw will have new works inspired by stories, myths and legends from around the globe on view entitled “Beautiful Imperfections”. Bagshaw notes, “In my first show, I had focused purely on Japanese Yokai. I wanted to continue with that exploration of folklore, ghosts and mythology, but on a much broader scale.” Continuing with his aesthetic he describes as “darker elements combined with an edge of humor or playfulness,” Bagshaw combines realistic portraiture and figurative work with imaginative back-stories. “‘There’s Always One’ is the centre piece for the show and is primarily my interpretation of the adage you can’t take it with you.”

Two great shows opening this weekend at Thinkspace Gallery in Culver City. Its shows like these that I wish more than anything I could just pop on over to take a look at the work in person.

Thinkspace is pleased to present ‘The Best Of Times’, an exhibition featuring new
works and multiple installations from the collaborative duo of Dabs Myla. ‘The Best Of Times’ will showcase a dozen new acrylic paintings on wood panel alongside a small collection of graphite works on paper.

Their new series of paintings and drawings will be presented alongside close to 100 handpainted installation elements ranging from old coffee tables and empty paint cans to teapots andashtrays.
Dabs and Myla are a lovely couple that have been reaching international fame for their incredible large scale murals seen around building in LA at the moment, to their detailed acrylic paintings being exhibited internationally. Im an all around big fan and avid follower of their work.
Being their second Solo at Thinkspace Im sure this one is going to be bigger and better than the last.

In the project room will be ‘Lost Civilization,’ an exhibition of 8 new acrylic paintings on canvas from Brazil based artist Fernando Chamarelli in what will be his debut solo exhibition with our gallery. His work is just beautiful, full of daring colours, abstract shapes and tribal elements.

Thinkspace Gallery presents Tran Nguyen 'The Synapse Between Here and There' and David Bray 'Return of Bad Wisdom' Opening this Saturday, The 16th of July at the Culver City gallery location.

Tran Nguyen was born in 1987 in Vietnam, and raised in Augusta, Georgia where she attended the Savannah College of Art and Design. In 2009 Tran received a BFA in Illustration from the University and still calls Georgia home. Tran is fascinated with creating work that can be used as a sort of psycho-therapeutic support vehicle, exploring the mind's surreal dreamscapes and subconscious desires. Her delicate work is greatly inspired by the Art Nouveau period and is created with colored pencil, graphite and thin glazes of highly diluted acrylic paint all in a muted palette that perfectly showcases her romanticized subject matter.

David Bray in from the UK in our project room for his debut U.S. solo show. 'Return of Bad Wisdom' features nine new mixed media works on paper along with a collection of smaller works that compliment the 7 larger works in the exhibit.s

'To perfect their representation of human anatomy, musculature, and proportion, artists throughout the ages turned to ancient Greek and Roman sculpture. By imitating ancient precedents, the Old Masters of art developed a classical figure type that remained the predominant mode of representation for centuries. Following, the 16th and 17h centuries of the Renaissance took the classical figure to a higher level through the use of perspective, the study of human anatomy and proportion, and through their development of an unprecedented refinement in drawing and painting techniques.
In the present day, these leading contemporary artists have a heightened ability to understand and interpret their subject, while emphasising the mind-set and methodologies that have guided artists for over five hundred years. Their figures are influenced by characteristics of today- feelings, surroundings, beliefs. and relationships, incorporated with new techniques and mediums, while still holding true the fundamentals of the classical form, thus becoming the New Masters.'

Literal-eyes concentrates specifically at the ways in which great writers have inspired this hand selected group of young and emerging European artists to be the painters they are today.

Whether inspired by a novel, poem, or a poignant phrase from their chosen literary piece, 30 artists are recreating how they visually and literally interpret their all time favourite piece of narrative into a real life painting. The artist has become famous for his signature candy pink bubbles, drips, ice cream sundaes, breasts and Japanese-inspired cutesy winged characters (also called Buff Monsters) which bring a smile to the face. As well as his highly collectable fine art paintings Buff Monster is known all over the world for his collectible toys and design projects.

‘I’ve always painted squirts and boobs and drips, and I’ve always considered them landscape paintings; oozing landscapes. Of course, I use a very limited color palette: Buff Monster pink, along with a couple other shades of custom-mixed pink, and white, black and grays. For me, color is very important and I think that using a very limited palette serves to distill the essence of the expression. Formally, the paintings are rendered with great detail and are created in the superflat method of painting. I take great care to keep the paintings as flat as possible; making sure the surfaces is as flat and perfect as I think is appropriate. I use very fine sandpaper along the way to guarantee a smooth surface’

It is the biggest thing to happen for Street Art in the artworld....EVER...
Top street artists, graffiti artists, photographers and more were invited to MOCA for the first major U.S museum survey of Graffiti and Street art. Here are a few images from the opening reception, kindly taken by THE HUNDREDS.
These images have left me speechless in the best possible way. Im just full of this sense of pride, Im so proud of the street artists, the art fans, and the curators that have brought Street art to this level.

ART IN THE STREETS- Curated by MOCA Director Jeffrey Deitch and Associate Curators Roger Gastman and Aaron Rose, the exhibition will trace the development of graffiti and street art from the 1970s to the global movement it has become today, concentrating on key cities such as New York, Los Angeles, San Francisco, London, and Sao Paulo, where a unique visual language or attitude has evolved. The exhibition will feature paintings, mixed media sculptures, and interactive installations by 50 of the most dynamic artists and will emphasize Los Angeles's role in the evolution of graffiti and street art, with special sections dedicated to seminal local movements such as cholo graffiti and Dogtown skateboard culture. A comprehensive timeline illustrated with artwork, photos, video, and ephemera will provide a historical context for the work.

New Interview with Derek Weisberg

London Miles recently had a virtual chat with California based sculptor, Derek Wiesberg. We thought it would be a good idea to share with you just what this truly talented fella has been up to and what makes him create his impressively detailed characters.

1. Your mediums of choice:

My primary medium of choice is clay/ceramics, I have been working with clay for close to 20 years, I guess I fell in love with it as a material early on. However I will make work with whatever material I need to convey my ideas most appropriately.

2. Three words to describe your artwork:

I dont know. . . . . . I guess: Figurative, sculpture, emotive, Humanism, accessible, sensitive, contemplative, spiritual, Damn, sorry thats more then 3 I couldn't do it.

3. What inspires you to create the characters you do? Life inspires me. My world and the world around me, my relationships and experiences. I am interested in depicting human emotions and the human condition. The stylization of the figures is meant to emphasis these emotions, for example the eyes wide set is a way to convey and express ideas of vulnerability, prey and disfunction. Really everything that comes into my eyes, ears, thoughts whatever inspires the work.

Joshua Liner Gallery is pleased to present Fireland, an exhibition of new paintings and works on paper by the British artist Ian Francis. This is Francis’ first one-man show at the gallery and marks his solo debut in New York.

Working in mixed media on canvas, Ian Francis combines abstraction, figuration, and elements of both painting and drawing to create distinctly contemporary works. His robust approach uses a range of techniques including acrylic, oil, charcoal, ink and graphite, all deployed in a spontaneous, seemingly off-the-cuff manner. Below this active “surface,” however, are subtle notes of melancholy, alienation and social critique, revealing a nuanced regard for contemporary mores.

Francis draws inspiration and raw material from cinema, pornography, street culture, and images sampled from the Internet, synthesizing these sources into a quasi-literal vision of the “mediated” landscape. Among the exhibition’s mixed-media paintings and selection of works on paper, a number depict urban street life and the complex interactions that occur when random souls collide. Amid high-color washes and jagged brushwork, youthful figures have a reckoning on park steps in A Boy Returns Home Not Realizing How Much He’s Changed. The cityscape is fragmented and unsettling in Walking Down a Street a Person is Crushed by Light, a poignant work that intimates the hardships faced by the elderly and other vulnerable beings among urban dwellers.

Elsewhere, a Japanese soft-porn princess makes an appearance in Anri Sugihara Three Seconds, a closeup portrait created from multiple perspectives over time. It’s a play on Sugihara’s own coquettish updating of the “fan dance” in her erotic YouTube videos. In other works, Francis depicts semi-clad female figures who loll and mix in casual groupings—some scenes are intimate, others hedonistic. These figures are recognizable as the young and beautiful denizens of media fantasies fueled by sex, death, and celebrity.

In these and other works, abstraction and figuration mutually support the artist’s suggestion of a worldview where the incongruities of modern urban life—violence and style, wealth and poverty, beauty and the grotesque—cannot help but intersect.

Ian Francis was born in 1979 in Bristol, UK, where he received a BA from University of the West of England and continues to live and work. Solo exhibitions include: Exodus, Lazarides Gallery, London (2010); Semi-Permanent, Kinsey/DesForges, Sydney, Australia (2009); Together Forever, Kinsey/DesForges, Los Angeles (2008); and Super Coma Fantasy, BLK/MRKT Gallery, Los Angeles (2007). Elbow Toe at Black Rat press- Opens tonight, 10th of March

Under the name Elbow Toe, Brooklyn based artist Brian Adam Douglas has been pasting his distinctive woodcuts, stencil work, large-scale charcoal drawings and collages onto the walls of cities all around the world throughout the past decade. His diverse practice is anchored by an interest in the human gesture as a powerful form of communication, one charged with unspoken narratives and he continually transforms public space into a stage for these private moments. The scenes in his most recent body of work focus on the bewildering act of parenthood. Just as he builds a finished image through the meticulous layering of tiny individual bits of coloured paper, so the meaning of the image is woven through layers of references to historically and culturally established narratives. This kind of intertextuality has become the foundation for the development of his distinctive style. The result is a sophisticated visual language where personal metaphors begin to communicate universal truths.

In Douglas’ work family life is a staged performance, animals are manifestations of human emotion, intense pattern breaks the jagged surface and functions like an ancient Epic storm: as his characters fight to find their balance the viewer holds their breath. This exhibition will be a bit like going to watch a Greek tragedy: pretty much the only thing to do in the city on a Thursday night.

Greg "Craola" Simkins curates INLE group show at 1988 gallery

Let me start by saying this has got to be the best group show of 2011...and we are only in March.
Greg "Craola" Simkins has put together a group show that is literally unbelivable.

Here is a bit about what this show is all about:

n 1974, Richard Adam’s wrote the beloved classic “Watership Down”. It is a tale about overcoming the obstacles of life that try to beat you into submission and coming out on top, told through the unlikely embodiment of rabbits. Upon reading the book at a young age, one particular thread stood out to me. The story of “The Black Rabbit of Inle”. It was on page 280 of this book that my Grandfather had gotten for me on a road trip that the story of Inle´ unfolds. The fear he induced in the rabbits who told tales of him is not much unlike our own fears of death and what is unknown. I always questioned was their fear based upon him or the inevitability of their own demise, and was it something to fear or welcome after a long life lived? With this book began my over 24 year obsession with using rabbits as a tool in my art. Upon relating my memories of this book with some artist friends of mine, I wasn’t surprised to find they had similar attachments to the story and subsequent movie and that it too was a huge influence on their work.

The question is asked over and over “what inspires you and your art?”. Well here is one aspect, and In my attempt to keep this story alive and in honor of Richard Adam’s timeless story we are proud to present “INLE”.

Anne Sofie Madsen graduated from the Danish Design School in 2009. She mainly uses watercolour, gouache and pencil. Not only is she an incredible illustrator, she's also a wickedly talented designer! Madsen's website is interesting because you can see connections between her illustrations and collections. Each illustration series is an imaginative mix of high-fashion and fairy tale. Brian Despain and Mia Araujo- Two upcoming shows at Roq La Rue

Two wicked new exhibitions open this friday at the Roq La Rue Gallery. 'Tin Machines and Mercuric Dreams' is a series of new paintings, drawings and sculptures by Brian Despain (below)

Brian Despain works with imaginary yet recognizable modern landscapes, but populates his world with seemingly self aware and melancholy robots. His work blends the natural world with technology with a slightly morbid slant. Skulls, machinery, and birds provide the forefront for a seemingly arcane number system the artist employs in all his work. His rich and luminous color palettes of post apocalyptic ochres, deep blues, and steel greys belie and hidden warmth and dark humor within his work.

The second exhibition is 'the Secret Keepers'- a new series of paintings by Mia Araujo.

Mia Araujo believes that all individuals contain an inner universe within them that is invisible to the naked eye. Her work, which evokes comparisons to art nouveau and often references literary figures, concentrates on giving shape to the unseen forces within her subjects - their thoughts, memories, emotions, and complex histories. These qualities fit together to form a vast, rich inner landscape of identity and mythology for her characters.

'Great Disasters Of The Twentieth Century'

Bray creates delicate and time-consuming drawings which explore emotion, utopia and a
world of fantasy through his subject matter of the beautiful and erotic, but the unatainable female form.

In his new solo show Bray is inspired by the record ‘Great Disasters of the Twentieth Century’ by George Lubitzer, on which there is a track called 70 days. “This track inspired me to do a drawing a day for 70 days, whatever style or content of that particular drawing dictated the style or content of the larger drawings - which evolved over the same period of time. Each drawing has a variety of mark making styles within it. The record details the occult, Egyptology, loss, magic and the supernatural - and i have tried to reflect that in the work”

His compelling works reveal his lifetime love of drawing and a very active imagination taking the viewer into his dark, amative world of fantasy. David has also had a successful commercial career since graduating in 1992 from Central St. Martins, in London with a degree in Graphic Design, with work commissioned by clients such as Harvey Nichols, H&M, Canon, Vodafone, BBC Television, Nokia, Puma, Virgin, Sony, Charles Worthington and magazines Elle, Flaunt, The Sunday Times,Time Out and many more.

A trip to some art galleries in Thailand

If you plan on taking a trip to Bangkok and would like to check out some galleries there, then I have a few to recommend. I recently visited Bangkok and was of course on the "hunt" for new art and artists from the region. To my surprise, I discovered an incredible collection of contemporary artists all living and working in Thailand, with very little exposure outside of the country.

One of the galleries helping these artists get exposed is Number One Gallery. They always go the extra mile to make sure the gallery is transformed for each show, putting on some amazing installations. They are located in the Silom Galleria Bld, in Silom. It looks like a shopping complex but its just full of art galleries, from Asian antiques to contemporary findings.

Another Gallery/shop that has some interesting stuff is Art Gorillas in Siam Square. Pathum Wan Bangkok. They have really creative exhibitions, including vinyl toys, installations, amazing paintings and again a nice collection of the artists from Thailand.

Its amazing to see an idea you had once actually get used by someone else..sometimes it can piss you off and go "shit they stole my idea!!" or you can just be happy that someone went through with it and actually how good the out come is.. because lets face it....if its a good idea someone will defenitly do it before you or its already been done.

Last year I contacted the New English, an incredible ceramics company in England. I wanted to collaborate with them to produce a limited edition custom designed tea pot and tea cup collection, featuring various artists from the New contemporary art world. I had to hold off on the project and put it on the back burner. So...naturally when doing my weekly hunting for interesting things to post, I found that the great gallery in Berlin, Strychnin Gallery has already done it and the collection

Robin Williams' ' Rescue Party' at the P.P.O.W Gallery

Robin Williams' first solo show, 'rescue party' opened yesterday at the P.P.O.W Gallery. The texture in her work always strikes me,especially when she paints balloons, which you can see here. This Show runs until the 26th of February at:

Through a series of eleven paintings, Williams reveals a surreal world inhabited by adolescents of ambiguous gender that are on the brink of discovery or revelation. Each painting has a distinct narrative but with no specific conclusion. There is a sense of pause in each work which heightens the sense of the impending chance for change. Williams is able to achieve this surreal timelessness through her painting techniques. While at once employing traditional painting methods, she is also experimental and intuitive. Her use of color, light, texture and composition are all used to explore painting as a medium and to link this to the conceptual content within each work.

The discovered photography of Vivian Maier

A friend of mine passed me this blog the other day and ever since I have had it open in my browser, going from work to sneeking peeks at the photography from Vivian, taken during the 1950's to 1990's...The story about this unknown talent is truly remarkable. I encourage you to take some time out of your day and have a look at her photographs. They are incredible and moving photos taken of life in Chicago.

Her photos were discovered not long ago by one Lucky person through an antiques auction, "Vivian's work was discovered at an auction here in Chicago where she resided most of her life. Her discovered work includes over 100,000 mostly medium format negatives, thousands of prints, and countless undeveloped rolls of film."

I warn you, if you like black and white photography then...you will love this!

Scott C.'s ' Great Showdowns' at Gallery 1988

I quickly became obsessed with this blog when Scott first started it early last year, with the intention of 'chronicling some of the greatest confrontations in FILM HISTORY'. Many of the most famous and dramatic moments in film undergo the Scott C. treatment to become humorous, witty, nostalgic and whimsical little paintings. Its so cool to see such celebrated popular, even cult film characters adopt that trademark wobbly-lined physique that Scott C.'s own characters are so well known for. This would be so fun to see!

A Gentle Kind of Cruelty- Ray Ceasar's upcoming exhibition at the Jonathan Levine Gallery.

I just saw these preview shots on Hi-Fructose from Ray Ceasar's new show entitled 'A Gentle Kind of Cruelty'. I think this show will be stunning! I especially love the piece below, which seems to be inspired by Fragonard's 'The Swing'.

Ray is a London born, Toronto bred artist, whose inspiration has been noted as being a concoction of having worked for 17 years in the art department of a hospital for sick children and being exposed such imagery as child abuse, animal testing and premature infants, his deep interest in model figures and dressing models and visions that derive from his condition of sleep paralysis, especially early visions of his late mother which manifested 'galleries of work which were to be [his] own'.

Ray's work invites you into environments both peaceful and unnerving, inhabited by exquisitely dressed characters of porcelain skin and demure features. Often we the viewers are left to decide whether they are angelic or just cold blooded.

Brett Amory's first ever UK Solo Show!

    The Outsiders ( The Lazarides Gallery) will begin 2011 with Brett Amory's first ever UK solo show!
    His work was featured in The Next Generation group show at London Miles last June, so i assure you that it is well worth seeing his work in person. I think he beautifully captures those normal day-to-day street scenes many of us are so accustomed to seeing with real expression and with brush strokes that are so swift they almost set the pieces in motion.
    The exhibition entitled ' Intentional Abstractions' comprises of a collection of paintings based on a Amory's 'Waiting' series, which focuses on travelers waiting on undergrounds, subways and platforms. The project began in 2001, and as it progressed the subjects ceased to be exclusively travelers, with the emphasis shifting to anonymous figures within the urban landscape.

A selection of Amory's work depicts the urban individual's yearning for presence and

the seeming impossibility of attaining it. The paintings portray commuters in transit
immersed in a quiet, even hopeful state or alternately plagued by the anguish of unfulfilled anticipation.

This is the best pencil work i have seen in AGES. Born and raised in Brixton, South London, T.S. Abe is only 21 and has been featured in Dazed and Confused and had a solo show at the Electric Blue Gallery in Shoreditch, London, when she was only 19!
I can't get over how rich her work is, the textures of the hair and skin is so striking, the work renders a great mixture of classical and contemporary influences where figures are often cocooned by whirling streams of fabric or baroque-style patterns.
Sometimes I prefer looking at sketchbook work rather than actual finished pieces which is why I have been glued to Abe's Blog for days now, its really beautiful, just pages of sketches and studies that really shows how hard she works and the strength of her ever growing versatility. One of my most recent hobbies and addictions is hunting for incredible tattoo artists. I have been doing my research for awhile now and I have recently come across the artwork of Lowrider Tattoo Studios. They have three tattoo studios in California and have a portfolio of artists that is just mindblowing.
These guys are not just tattoo artists...These are fine artists, realist tattooist, and have incredible style. Two artists really stood out to me, Jose Lopez - who im assuming is one of the shop owners and Jun Cha- an incredible multi talented artist from flesh to canvas.

A bit about LowRider Tattoos, they are Recognized internationally as one of the best tattoo studios in the world, They have received international acclaim from magazines worldwide and their work speaks for itself along with the 150 awards they have won internationally.

Recently opened at Jonathan LeVine Gallery in New York are two great exhibitions, The Rising- a series of new and older works by Parisian-born, Montréal-based artist Jean Labourdetter or better known on the streets as Turf One, and Ambergris, new works by Southern California-based artist Josh Agle (aka Shag) .

Victor Castillo & Luke Kopycinski/ Plus (wtf is) Lowbrow..Opening this Friday at London Miles

Opening on Friday, December 10th at London Miles Gallery is the end of the year showcase. Its our final exhibition of the year and Im happy to say we are finishing off 2010 on a high. It has been one incredible year.

On show will be a collection of original paintings and limited edition prints by Chilian artist Victor Castillo and Austrailian artist Luke Kopycinski.

Also on show is a group show we have put together titled, (wtf is?) LOWBROW- a showcase of illustration, paintings and limited edition prints from a collection of pop surrealist, comic, dark surrealist and illustration artists...a mix of everything coming out of the "new contemporary" / "lowbrow" art genra.

The work of Victor Castillo strikes like a swift blow to the stomach and stirs the innards of a popular iconography fed by comics, illustration and television. His drawing produce slogans on daily consumption and monstrous beings enslaved to flesh and money. This production, consumption and digestion of statements reveal the violence of everyday life and denounce the universality of rationality incarnated by diabolical figures of animals or humans.

Luke's work is intriguing, dark and has an underlying current of something very human. Best described as Dark Noir, his subject matter is of the beautiful and the melancholy, aspects of the people around him, both what they project on the outside and what they keep inside. His oils are a mix of realism and impressionism, a mixture of strong soft shining lights and heavy sharp shadows that centre the focus of the pieces.

'Never Judge...?'- Current show at the StolenSpace Gallery

I went to see 'Never Judge...?' today at StolenSpace. In order to
celebrate book cover art, the gallery has worked in conjunction with Penguin to exhibit works from over 100 international artists. Each one has been asked to create cover art (keeping it to the traditional size of a Penguin book), using their medium of choice, for a book of their choice, whether it be one that inspires them, or one which they've treasured from childhood. ROA, Shepard Fairey, Mike Stilkey, Andy Council and Tara McPherson are a few of the artists featured.

It was interesting to see artists I respect, create art for authors I respect and I think the show is absolutely relevant since 'With the advent of the iPad it's now questionable how long the printed novel and its cover will be around, just like the album cover, it'll be resigned to a thumbnail on iTunes' (press release)

The show runs until the 19th of December, you can see it all on the StolenSpace website but i recommend seeing it in person!

Christina Mrozik is a Michigan based illustrator and sculptor. I'm really taken by the level of texture and itricate detail, it takes me back to the styles of Arthur Rackam or Edmund Dulac.

Reality and anomily merge to create hybrid species of animals, often depicting them in very human situations. I think of them as a sort of whimsical take on anatomy drawings. Almost makes you wonder what it would be like to I live in the beak of a pelican, or on the top floor of a giraffe's neck !

Christina uses mediums such as pen, ink and water colour, here is an exerpt from her statement: 'Yet in truth, animals make choices, have feelings, laugh and share. They garden and babysit, they mourn their dead. We discover these things that we want to declare as being strictly human to be part of glorified nature every day. The divisions we hold in our minds are being constantly broken down by science, man's most honest invention'

In the spotlight: Nate Frizzell.

Nate Frizzell (featured in Hunt and Gather-discovering new art) is celebrating the recent success of his sold out solo show at Lebasse Projects in Culver city, plus a new print release with A Paper Tiger. His career as an artist has seen a steady growth since the start, he has greatly improved in his style and technique and today I would happily say he is one of the top new contemporary "realist" painters around.

"Since his first solo show at LeBasse Projects, Nate Frizzell has been experimenting with different techniques and media, making a switch from acrylics to oils. The switch amplifies Frizzell’s already beautifully rendered figures and animals resulting in gorgeous coloring, clarity, and depth. His themes of self-discovery and examination of the human condition return in the winteresque environment of his solo exhibition ‘I Should Know Who I Am By Now.’ 'To See Her Like You'd See A Star' was one of our favorite pieces from the show and we are very happy to bring you a limited print, exclusively at Paper Tiger."

Legendary New York graffiti artist DUSTER UA comes to London for a one day seminar at London Miles Gallery

London Miles Gallery is hosting an afternoon with New York subway artist Duster, on December 4th, 2010. Curated by Paul 'Don' Smith, Duster will be traveling outside of the USA for the first time in his life, to give a talk about his legendary career as a New York subway graffiti artist during the 70's and 80's. The afternoon will include an exhibition of original and rare photographs from Henry Chalfant and Martha Cooper, authors of the graffiti and subway artists bible 'SUBWAY ART', an exhibition of limited edition prints and original artwork by Duster, and a one hour Q and A with the artist as he talks through his experiences as a Bronx, New York train writer.

Visitors to the event will enjoy a private screening of STYLEWARS; the original Hip Hop documentary directed by Tony Silver and co- produced with Henry Chalfant. The film was awarded the Grand Prize for Documentaries at the 1983 Sundance Film Festival. STYLE WARS is regarded as the indispensable documentation of New York street culture and subway art of the early '80s, the filmic record of a golden age of youthful creativity that exploded into the world from a city in crisis. This girl is one of my favorite new artists coming out of the UK. She is just incredible, her work is captivating and actually addictive. So beware..

Thinkspace Gallery celebrates FIVE wonderful years of being LA's finest contemporary art gallery. They have exhibited basically everyone, put on incredible artshows and have given the whole of the New contemporary art movement a platform to launch from. I have been a personal fan and follower of the gallery since their first year of opening, and its been a wonderful journey to watch them grow and even have the honor to work with the fine fellows that run the gallery.

To celebrate their 5th Birthday, they have an incredible line up of artists that they have exhibited in the past years and a few new ones...You will see an ALL STAR group show, with works from Audrey Kawasaki, Amy Sol, Joshua Petker, KMNDZ, Sarah Joncas, Natalia Fabia, Sylvia Ji, Gaia, Chet Zar and so many more- its just jaw dropping.

Greg Simkins' 'Storyteller'- Gallery 1988

Greg 'Craola' Simkins will exhibit his new body of work entitled 'Storyteller' at Gallery 1988 in L.A. which opens This Friday, the 5th of November.

The exhibition will be accompanied by the realease and signing of his new book- 'Drawn From The Well'. The book is 300+ pages, documenting Simkin's infinite imagination through sketches, doodles and drawings that give the reader insight into the more technical side of his composition process.

Even the flyer looks ridiculous, SOMEHOW he manages to outdo himself technically with each series of paintings. Simkins was the main feature of last month's JUXTAPOZ, which contained a brilliantly written essay and interview. Here is a one of the many fascinating things Simkins' revealed about the story behind 'Storyteller', following the wonderous adventures of the little protagonist Ralph:

'It was during these times he yearned for spring days that the pages of these books took new life and exploded from the compartments in Ralph's mind where they had been carefully filed away. They would attach themselves with ferocity to the billowing clouds and not just resemble a white tiger surrounded by bowls of tropical fish, but would become this scene, at least to Ralph.'

The Idol Hours- more than 30 artists recreate Iconic historical artworks

Its almost time! The Idol Hours opens at London Miles Gallery on November 12th 2010 and will be on display until December 1st 2010. For those of you that do not know, I am the curator of London Miles Gallery- this exhibition is the largest group show I have ever personally organized and am super excited about it as its a wonderful theme and the artists taking part are from a wonderful fresh contemporary art movement Im proud to exhibit in London.

Many for the first time! All the artists have been asked to take inspiration from a piece of art from before WWII and recreate it in their own way. As we take a look back in history, we are not only paying homage to the great master painters that have inspired us, but also shinning the spotlight on a new generation of artists that are truly as talented.

We are doing a lot of work to make the opening night one to remember, and I encourge you to be there! Not only will you get to see a collection of wonderful, unique pieces of artworks, but you will be able to take part in the making of our own historical moment.

Moniker art fair: Herakut setting up their exhibition space.

Yesturday, I went along to Moniker Art Fair. Had a nice look around and really enjoyed the amazing project spaces they had a few selected artists create. Here is Time lapse video of Herakut setting up their installation as part of the fair. They also painted a wall outside of the fair all afternoon. Its an impressive sight to see these two talented artists in action.

David Choe paints "the scariest thing ever" and explains his own unique vision of hell. The work is part of Lazarides Galleries' 'Hell's Half Acre' show, deep in the labyrinthine tunnels under London's Waterloo Station. The show is open to the public from 12 - 17 October 2010, and is a reinterpretation of Dante's nine circle of hell by a roster or artists including Jonathan Yeo, Conor Harrington, Vhils, Mark Jenkins, Polly Morgan and many more.
